Jean Thomas is a multi award winning conservationist who walks the talk and has lived and breathed conservation for almost 30 years.
Her work with the Tenkile Conservation Alliance (www.tenkile.com) in Papua New Guinea has lead to community engagement and mobilization among 50 villages and the protection of 180,000 hectares of rainforest saving critically endangered tree kangaroos from extinction. What began as a conservation based project has turned into a holistic approach of integrated conservation and development.
The key to her success she says – “is to rise above any personal conflict and find the thing that is bigger than yourself. You have to constantly adapt and evolve to do whatever it takes to make a difference in this world. That is what living a life of purpose looks like. It is not always an easy thing to do but it does make life more meaningful.”
Her work has been shown in the film Into the Jungle (www.intothejungle.net) which features Sir David Attenborough and Dame Jane Goodall.
Jean was awarded the Future for Nature Award in 2010, Australian Geographic Conservationist of the year 2013 and the Telstra Business Womens Award in 2015.
